At first I thought it was automated, but no they are responding in real time! (Hi! If you're reading this. Sorry you're in a meeting and in urgent need of gift cards! I'll do my best to buy them all). I know gift cards are a way to launder but was wondering why Google?

It's phishing/scam in real time so I'm just wondering how profitable/untraceable Google gift cards are. (Right now, "my dean" is trying to convince me not to drop them by in whatever meeting he's stuck at!) Also, fascinating, they wanted $700 worth. Less would've been easier, no?pic.twitter.com/ho3j4H7dNi

So, weirdly, I'm finding that the auto-reply feature of even MS outlook is generating good enough responses to continue the conversation.

LOL update, I meant to email my dean and Outlook autocompleted the spammers email since I had emailed back and forth with them hahaha. Yes, I accidentally sent it. I hope they send me back proper feedback on my plan!

We actually just published a blog post on gift card BEC attacks today. Untraceable? Technically not, but they’re laundered so quickly it doesn’t really matter.https://www.agari.com/email-security-blog/gift-cards-emerging-bec-method/ …

Oh, great, just the info I was looking for. My team is amateurish, they spammed so many people at once that they were exposed quickly. Also the amount is a little too much to be sent without someone checking, so overreach.

A few weeks back, a prof at Northeastern,
@ryancordell, received some very similar phishing emails. See thread:https://twitter.com/ryancordell/status/1089687116857131008 …

Ah, same one! Let me suggest to them buying online.

Of course it works better if it's a dean you know and not one from another campus lol
