Here’s an article I wrote about that path. https://www.technologyreview.com/s/611806/how-social-media-took-us-from-tahrir-square-to-donald-trump/ …

And we’re sleepwalking into our version. Not that I’d be happy about a more conscious march. Still, though, painful to see the very achievable alternative path—one that tries to preserve core human rights and offer the whole world an alternative—is abandoned, and for so little.

I mean, this is authoritarian infrastructure. It’s asymmetric social control. I find the idea that Europe/US governments won’t follow corporate breadcrumbs to join them in surveillance authoritarianism to be ahistorical.https://twitter.com/joelcifer/status/1106915945807859715 …

Is the US gov installing 600 mil surveillance cameras and equipping them with facial recognition software to assist in compiling loyalty scores for every member of the population that can later be used against them, even to restrict travel? Let’s dial back the moral equivalence.

The US government doesn't have to because corporations will pay for that surveillance in order to create private social credit scores for the purpose of targeted advertisements, which law enforcement can conveniently access. So it's not really a false equivalency.

I'd say we're really building sousveillance. How many times have cops been busted by smartphones? It's a lot harder for them to cover up now. I can also cite examples of neighborhood watches who share private surveillance with cops to protect their hoods.

The WSJ is a second-tier tyranny, and they know it. Time for reparations, and to fix the badness, not embrace it.
