I wrote about Facebook’s pivot. I think this is quite a big deal. https://www.ben-evans.com/benedictevans/2019/3/13/0mboxl0imfh636ggky829vnweu2qpv …

Will end to end encryption solve their false news issue or propogate it?

@zeynep spoke about this at@cern on Tuesday for#Web30 - end to end encryption is a way for@facebook to wash their hands of content, and to essentially allow for extremist content and#fakenews propagation by saying they can do nothing about it. The pivot is bollocks.1 reply 0 retweets 5 likes -

I hope that isn’t what she says- it would be extraordinarily poor analysis.

There is a long running discussion in tech around the trade-offs between security and safety in encryption. Asserting that anyone involved somehow wants to wash their hands if either part of that is wildly wrong.

Not tweet length but I talked about that trade-off but also that the key privacy question is the data Facebook collects for ad-targeting which never included messaging. For e2e, the question is if true person-to-person messaging or has viralish features—ike WhatsApp still does.

I mean, you give phone no just for security to Facebook for 2FA and even that gets used for ad-targeting plus can't be made private. The tracking pixel is all over the web. Facebook purchases third party data (in US, at least). Those are key privacy questions. E2E is orthagonal.

(That said, I support expanding E2E but in specific ways. E2E is very very thorny and the devil is in the details, and it would likely not be unsustainable if it was expanded in a way that furthered the mass messaging/viral side. I've long said that it's the thorniest next issue)
