Is there a writeup for why Boeing Max planes are grounded rather making sure all pilots are up to speed—since even if this is same issue as Lion Air the problem is behavior wasn't documented? Grounding planes is a drastic measure that may well lead to many deaths from driving.

I think the risk is that any even minor issue with the plane would be magnified if they kept flying.

How many deaths from driving are likely from grounding a plane that is only a small portion of an airline's fleet? Likely passengers will be accommodated on other flights with non-MAX planes; they won't be driving.
-
Also, the majority of 737-MAX routes in the U.S. seem to be long distance--NY to Miami, transcontinental or to Hawaii or the Caribbean. Again, most passengers will just find other flights, not drive.

They have lots of reports of problems from pilots with the auto pilot software doing a "nose down". They have a software upgrade that was supposed to be rolled out in January but the govt shut down (yes. Trump's temper tantrum.) delayed it.

Everybody keeps ignoring the reports of 5 different pilots over the last few months that they had unexpected difficulty controlling the plane. 2 accidents does not a pattern make, but 5 near-misses certainly does.

They weren’t near misses from the reports.

Between the two crashes and these 5 similar complaints in US alone from October and November, this seems like the right call. A temporary grounding until this problem is fixed ... don't know why that's controversial at all. https://www.dallasnews.com/business/airlines/2019/03/12/boeing-737-max-8-pilots-complained-feds-months-suspected-safety-flaw …

Ethiopian Airlines has said that the pilot of the crashed flight was appraised of the last bulletin about the 737 Max's nose dive behaviour so perhaps the belief is that the malfunction is not recoverable in all circumstances.

Do people actually drive the distances these planes are meant for?
