the mechanisms aren't clear to me, that's for sure. The best rule seems to be that if it's not outright illegal, someone is definitely doing it; and even if it is illegal, facebook probably _is_ doing it.

It took <72 hrs after *I* found out I was pregnant for Instagram to start serving me maternity clothing ads. (Which is so mistimed for multiple reasons.) I hadn’t even phoned my midwife yet. I work in digital & even I found it horrifying, let alone shocking.

I think this also applies to "is facebook listening to my conversations?" question. facebook says they don't, but I have a feeling that they get data from apps that do.

Point taken and agree. Although edge providers typically don’t have choice in requesting the data not be used beyond analytics / service provision for the core app. Meanwhile Facebook tools like Antonio are using your tweet to suggest Facebook is a neutral party with zero blame.
