I can’t help but wonder if the terrible, inexcusable hacking of one tech billionaire might get the group a little more sensitized to the industry they built—where we’re all exposed. They can build mansions behind wall, but they text and message like the rest of us.

Yubikey does not do usability. Not seen it from Fido. PGP reprised

All true, but the fact is that senior citizens (and more than a few not so seniors) are stuck with having forgotten their password & lost the 2FA token. Passwords as a whole need to go away, but until then we have figure out protection that doesn’t harm as many as it helps

It's a tradeoff between security & usability. Usability wins frequently. Physical tokens, like keys, get lost/damaged all the time.

Make physical token standard for 2FA, and I'll need a building superintendent's keyring for all my SecureIDs and YubiKeys. I'm quite happy with my TOTP app on my smartphone.

Default app-based (non-sms) 2FA would also be a huge improvement *and* a lot more people would use it vs physical token.

“Security” questions used in conjunction with a password never were 2FA — both are something you know. Not sure if providers didn’t understand or were just looking for a cheap way to make users think they were secure.
