As far as I can tell, there is no way to block and individual channel from YouTube recommendations right? Or turn off recommendations? Can one even block a video?

Click the ellipsis, “I don’t like this video”, “tell us more”, “I don’t like this channel”? It works from the homepage, as far as I can tell.

No, but been programming them since a wee one, and my job is to figure all this out and I couldn’t. Neither could tona of people who replied. Which speaks to the situation: even if the option exists, it’s buried.https://twitter.com/prezntval/status/1093338968064548864 …

So, it seems that there is no way to tell YouTube to BLOCK "white rationalist" blah blah videos appearing on a minors' recommendations. You can try to dislike stuff and pray to the algorithm deities. No real controls―which would be *so* easy to implement—as far as I can tell.

YouTube is a key hub of culture diffusion globally and it's helping set the world on fire. It happens slowly so harder to measure but eventually there will be studies and UN reports and documentation of its ugly role. This, not the moonshots, will be how its history is written.

Maybe there are convoluted ways that already involved parents can manage this but that isn't helpful at all. Recommendations, autoplay and everything in this trash fire should be off by default and be very limited when on. Yes, not so lucrative but it's the only responsible path.

It’s terrible how little control you have in almost any video platform. As a parent of a toddler, I want to curate the videos he sees. Instead, I’m trying to explain and distract when he wants “that one.”

I’ve turned that off so many times across multiple devices. Somehow it always seems to end up back on.

There have been some looks at how YT pushes more and more extreme recommendations like https://buff.ly/2GbQ5Fj  from @NYMag. If you ever do view a video to learn about an opposing viewpoint, it seems like your recommendations are going to be all conspiracy from there on out.
