Also, air-integrated and hose-connected seems reasonable? What's with all these watches? Isn't that just one more point of failure? What am I missing here?

A Suunto Zoop will do everything you need.

I use an old Nemo Wide. Bulky but clear, and does the thing without many frills. The USB cable is stupidly expensive though.

Sorry Zeynep, no recommendation. Because willing to start it at age 40s. For now, just swimming and working :)))

Wrist mounted is nice because it's less to tangle, but you have a hose anyway, so may as well use it. Get one that shows you all the info w/out clicking buttons, and that does nitrox. Make sure that you can click any buttons with whatever gloves you use.

Personally, I strongly prefer an air integrated computer because it takes so much calculation away and lets you focus on enjoying the dive. Otherwise, you have to manually combine no deco time and air time remaining. Suunto Cobra would be my choice.

Make sure to sure to have Nitrox. Suunto and Mares work fine. Zoop/Vyper and Wide are good basic choices.

I went for the atomic aquatics cobalt 2. On my dry suit the wrist stuff doesn’t work. I liked the big display with huge buttons so I wasn’t straining to read under water.
