This is getting dangerously close to an unfalsifiable hypothesis. If reporters hugely amplified narratives put forward by Russian trolls, let's see some actual *evidence* of that.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1075835506842202112 …

Point is, you can't get any of this by looking at percent of tweets/social media posts made directly by professional RU troll accounts—which is what I'm objecting to. Can't definitely establish counterfactual causality about past event, but can study how the ecology worked..

I wonder if Nate being in the business of measuring something that his own work can influence kinda causes a cognitive dissonance that damages his logic abilities

And (as I noted in other thread) some of the narrative-shaping power of the propaganda stemmed from it calling attention to actual real issues that the media was otherwise generally ignoring. So it’s complicated, systems are complex, but that doesn’t mean propaganda didn’t matter
-
It needs WAY more attention then it’s being given. Nate cavalierly writing it off isn’t helping.

I think that started with Bannon in some way, I read? Of course maybe there’s no separation between his work and Russia’s, based on widespread suspicions.

this is also forgetting instances like Pizzagate and the Seth Rich conspiracy, which was shared by trolls (both foreign & domestic). We can't measure the impact but we can see it IRL
-
PizzaGate is my favorite example! “Oh none of this stuff online really influences people...” The guy drove hours and hours intending to basically shoot up a pizza place!
