It’s worse than you thought. Facebook gave: -Microsoft names of users’ friends without consent -Netflix and Spotify got to read users’ private messages -Amazon got user contact info via friends. Big story from @gabrieldance @laforgia_ @nickconfessore https://nyti.ms/2GqnbC9

Here's my hot takes, from last spring and this week. Hot take number one from last April: at this point, apologies do not make any sense. https://www.wired.com/story/why-zuckerberg-15-year-apology-tour-hasnt-fixed-facebook/ …pic.twitter.com/OEZcWnYY26

Hot take from 2014. Facebook's surveillance machine is a bad bargain, and it's a structural problem. It's the business model that's the core problem driving all this surveillance which is then shared or breached or leaked or misused etc. https://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/04/opinion/zeynep-tufekci-mark-zuckerberg-let-me-pay-for-facebook.html …pic.twitter.com/rrZbKuboh4

What should Congress do? I don't mind the testimony ritual. Accountability is important in a democracy. Maybe dragging executives to be grilled, again, is a great idea for raising awareness. But in terms of regulation, the problems are clear. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/09/opinion/zuckerberg-testify-congress.html …pic.twitter.com/yOPO3Qhtec

Finally hot take from this week! Big tech has to change its business model—along with a bunch of other things, for sure. It's neither too late nor impossible. Smart regulation could and should push things along that path. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/09/opinion/zuckerberg-testify-congress.html …pic.twitter.com/QeyDxC25WQ

So, as many suspected, Facebook combined data from wherever it could in order to suggest "people you may know"—also outing psychiatrist's patients to one another etc. What this reporting shows is that Facebook exchanged people's *data* (without informing them) to get that data.pic.twitter.com/1LGNtWf6HY

Kudos to @kashhill for the "people you may know" investigation, by the way, and also note Facebook's answer to her when she asked about it. In light of what we now know, it's clear they purposefully evaded her.https://twitter.com/kashhill/status/1075229832311660544 …

In the summer of 2017, I asked Facebook if it used signals from "third parties such as data brokers" for friend recommendations. Kicking myself for not recognizing the evasion in their answer. 1. FB's answer via email 2 What the NYT found out about PYMK in internal FB docs pic.twitter.com/Sv2kwqsJ6u

Huawei is world's second largest manufacturer of smart phones. All privacy breaches are wrong but was this regular phone integration—to allow apps to operate? That is a *general* problem. The government, not a company, should decide what's not allowed. https://twitter.com/BCAppelbaum/status/1075223086142840833 …

Only real feasible answer is privacy by design. Data should not be collected beyond immediately necessary, deleted as soon as possible, and always kept as local & encrypted as possible. See: Apple phones. That's why the business model + regulations matter. https://twitter.com/BCAppelbaum/status/1075223086142840833 …pic.twitter.com/Qo3WuAWd26
