Yes, tech platforms can and should change their business models. They're in non-stop crisis control because the ad-financed model is corrosive. My latest for @wired. (Why, yes, that *is* a pink unicorn with blinders. Tech needs to take off the blinders!

And many smart paint corporations did survive this significant change. ;-)

“To force platforms out of their rut, some regulation will be necessary. We should discuss outlawing invasive digital tracking (online or offline), merging data from multiple sources, and maybe even microtargeting based on surveillance.”

What do you think about this modest proposal? “User targeted advertising is illegal” You may select advertisements based on the adjacent content. But you may never advertise based on the identity of the person viewing the content. (Take all the profit out of the surveillance)

Hey Zeynep. What would your position be on this business model for a social media site? To use the site you have two options: 1) A free tier that tracks your data and presents you with targeted ads. 2) A $3 a month tier that doesn't store personal data and doesn't show you ads.

You said you want companies like Facebook to be the arbiters what is true and false. This can lend itself to many lucrative business models.

There are other models. I have one of them. However getting traction in a market dominated by massive corporations who have no incentive to stop, combined with a society that likes its free toys, makes it very difficult. We decided 5 years ago to build tech that didn’t need ads.

If you don’t need ads, you don’t need profiling/tracking. You don’t need to collect or store any personal identifiers. You can build accountable and trusted technology and business models that do not rely on ad-based surveillance. But we’re up against parties who profit from it.
