People: get a security key for your Gmail, Facebook, Insta, Github—whatever you want to protect. *Especially* if you are a high-level target. Regular 2FA, including authenticator, can be phished. SMS can be redirected. (Security key how-to on next tweet). https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2018/12/iranian-phishers-bypass-2fa-protections-offered-by-yahoo-mail-and-gmail/ …pic.twitter.com/khUUDSIUk5

Here's how to install a security key for your Gmail. Get two keys, put the second one someplace safe or give to a friend/partner and have that be the backup. (They can't log on *just* with the security key: still need the password. It's just a backup). https://techsolidarity.org/resources/security_key_gmail.htm …

We're fine using keys/badges to enter our houses, offices... Email security is one thing that should be taken seriously. It's a tiny extra step! Bank/credit card fraud is probably easier to deal with (it could be reversed). If your email is hacked, info can be siphoned quickly.

      A security key is a great stocking stuffer. 🎄🎅 https://www.amazon.com/Yubico-Security-Key-USB-Authentication/dp/B07BYSB7FK/ …

Sooo... If regular person: use an iPhone or an iPad and secure *that* device. Apple's are secure devices, as these things go. Use TouchID/strong password. Use the Gmail app, for example (can't be phished). Don't need a security key there. https://twitter.com/Kgar_Horrible/status/1073581404414468096 …

Otoh, if you're a really high-level target—investigating a hostile head of state or high-level official or powerful entities— Google has an advanced protection system with security keys for mobile devices. I don't yet recommend this for ordinary people. https://landing.google.com/advancedprotection/ …

When Google first rolled out the program, China watchers skeptically pointed out that the suggested primary U2F key was from Feitian, a Chinese company. Now Google suggests its own branded key, the Titan, but it’s actually made by Feitian https://www.zdnet.com/article/google-launches-titan-security-keys-but-recommends-keys-from-chinese-firm-with-military-links-in/ …pic.twitter.com/mBYDrT2ja7

Yubico, the brand I'm recommending, is made in Sweden and USA. I don't comment on people who need advanced protection. So that's not relevant. (Also, the protocol is solid and these things are tested but in any case... If you are that kind of target—need advice elsewhere).

Right, I get that about Yubico and the protocol in general. But if anyone reads your tweet above mine and is working on China issues, they might appreciate knowing

Sure. To be honest, even in that case—target of China—I'd just use a Yubikey, lock down my settings and skip advanced protection. (That advanced protection security key also seems to fall apart quickly🙄—Yubikeys are like iron). Key there is locking down account recovery options.
