Elsevier pockets all the profits but “publishers don’t pay authors for papers or peer reviewers for their reviews. The research undergirding the published papers often is wholly or partially funded via public grants—that is, by taxpayers, who must pay again to read the results.”https://twitter.com/erinroseglass/status/1071116288649359360 …

when you think of our country's crippling student debt, the rise of tuition, the decline of tt faculty, the lack of public access to research, remember we produce billions of dollars of revenue for a company that calls all the shots https://www.latimes.com/business/hiltzik/la-fi-hiltzik-uc-elsevier-20181207-story.html …

This is what needs to happen: all the universities get together and just .. don't negotiate. We do all the work, they pocket the profit. Why play at all?https://twitter.com/GosseVuijk/status/1071690509926785024 …

In the Netherlands they succeeded to force Elsevier into accepting Open Access by negotiating as a block. Rather than individual universities negotiating, it was the association of universities (together with academic libraries) that negotiated this deal https://www.elsevier.com/about/open-science/open-access/agreements/VSNU-NL …

To clarify, I don’t mean repeat the Netherlands deal. I mean all the universities get together and refuse this hefty profit extraction on the back free academic labor.https://twitter.com/lisalibrarian/status/1071803045607026688 …

I'm not so sure that locking-in a contract to pay ELS APC fees in addition to subscriptions is quite as good a deal for universities as it might initially seem.... https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1071794976957317120 …

Yes indeed. To be fair though, of all the @deVSNU publisher deals it's the one that is the most minimal and sluggish on transitioning to open access. Let's see what the current negotiations for a new deal will bring.

This is so damned exhausting. I was a young academic in 1990s during the theft. We knew what was happening. IIRC, boards governing journals didn't deign to respond to doubts and concerns. Typical tenured response: "Oh I know Prof. X on the board, he's a great guy. Don't worry."

When you take public money or a grant, the contract should build in that the product of the research is open access. This is a big assistance to education, which is the University's mission after all, no?
