Also, the text even calls it "OTP"—abbreviated, with no explanation. Programmers are designing user-interface and non-security people are designing the verification process...

I remember another "verification" process triggered after I logged on to ATM with Apple Wallet card. ATM prints slip saying call this number. At the number, automated system says enter the text we just sent. HELLO. I used the phone's NFC. I HAVE THE PHONE! I CAN READ ITS TEXTS.

My bank recently went from using phisical card for 2fa (numbers on card in grid, each operation would ask for 3 coordinates) to a 30 second code provided by an app on the same phone. I feel it's a downgrade, I could keep the card and phone separate, but now...

I bought an expensive thing with a credit card. The company I bought from (not the CC company) called me to ask verification questions. One was "What's a major highway near you". I thought "Well, I just gave you my address, and I'm at my computer, so I could check Google Maps.".

What I actually said was something like "I just moved here, and I don't drive so I don't really know. Oh, yeah, I walk under a major highway every day, I-70". They let the purchase happen. The major highway I walk under every day is not, in fact, I-70.

I had the opposite experience, I wanted to link google pay to my bank account but even after answering to all security questions they would have to send me a code over SMS/phone. I couldn't since I was using another SIM card

Bank: For security, please tell us at which branch you opened your account. Me: I never opened an account with you. Y’all bought my bank and shut it down. Bank: Thank you; that is the correct answer.

I'm sorry about that. I was arguing to the functional analyst and the security architect that it didn't make sense, but they ignored me. Maybe they just wanted to collect phone numbers. (* True story, though probably not your bank ;) )
