“Facebook employed a Republican opposition-research firm to discredit activist protesters, in part by linking them to the liberal financier George Soros.. tapped business relationships, persuading a Jewish civil rights group to cast some criticism of the company as anti-Semitic.”https://twitter.com/sheeraf/status/1062813027848732672 …

Let me repeat. New York Times is reporting that Facebook hired Republican lobbyists firms to paint people opposing its policies as Soros puppets...

Facebook’s DC policy guy is a Republican who showed up at Kavanaugh hearings to support him personally, and hosted the celebration party at his home. Silicon Valley is not liberal in substance—mostly liberal only in performative stuff. https://twitter.com/mattzeitlin/status/1062822603348418566 …

That whole NYT story on Facebook is one of a giant corporation throwing its weight around to get its way—just like other giant corporations. Not only is it not liberal, though, it’s not even smart in its responses—getting played easily by deliberate conservative flak.

So is there an update? From Facebook to this NYT story?

Facebook's response. Basically: "yeah, we did hire that firm which did lobby the press to go look at Soros funding of our critics and there's nothing wrong with that, but we fired the firm last night for no reason right after that NYT story." ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2018/11/new-york-times-update/ …pic.twitter.com/jR4zKTtQyz

The reason everyone from Facebook lobbyist firm to President Trump tries to paint critics as illegitimate by claiming they take Soros money is, well, anti-semitism works, but also they want their critics to have NO MONEY. Meanwhile, Facebook itself spends big amounts on lobbying.

They just want critics to be underfunded & without resources to mount political challenges. Facebook, all big corporations, right wing billionaires—they all spread money around. Resources to oppose power are scarce and thus Soros Foundation is targeted.
