Every vote should be counted, however long it takes, but I think it's unaccetable that one of the richest nations in the world cannot reliably call elections on election night in a transparent and accountable manner when pretty much everyone else can. Fixing this is so important!https://twitter.com/PamKeithFL/status/1060885522103590916 …

Our problem is the rush to call elections on election night! People are anxious & excited. News outlets want to be the first to satisfy the viewers with an answer. But mostly they get close races wrong & deliver a false sense of finality. Big counties take time. #CountEVERYvote

I know about all the issues but almost all of them are solveable problems. It would create a challenge only for a very small percentage of unusually close races—speedy delivery of mail-in ballots (USPS has the infrastructure for this), optical scan counts, risk-limiting audits...

Length of time to result adds to drama, loss of trust and (even more) negative politicization of the electoral process and political uncertainty. Most of the obstacles are solveable—only a really really small subset of races should be outstanding next day. https://twitter.com/jennygadget/status/1060901628520198144 …

Put another way: it's normal for a few races to be outstanding, but this much uncertainty days into post-election is outside global norms. We've let our electoral infrastructure to crumble and/or be politicized and weaponized. Fixing this should be the highest political priority.

The conditions under which races are outstanding should also be very clear and consistent across the country. From a foreigner's perspective it's very weird to watch the different standards used in different states.

States have broader jurisdiction than the Federal Govt of US. Constitution Amendment 10t: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people."

The United States government is a government of limited jurisdiction, states are governments of general jurisdiction. Disparity between states is to be expected, except to the degree that maybe some things (things that work) should be the same the world over.

One of the big problems in Florida is that Supervisor of Elections is itself an elected office. Politicization is almost inevitable when vote is close (though our county is fortunate to have an SOE who is very competent and nonpartisan).
