I know about all the issues but almost all of them are solveable problems. It would create a challenge only for a very small percentage of unusually close races—speedy delivery of mail-in ballots (USPS has the infrastructure for this), optical scan counts, risk-limiting audits...

Length of time to result adds to drama, loss of trust and (even more) negative politicization of the electoral process and political uncertainty. Most of the obstacles are solveable—only a really really small subset of races should be outstanding next day. https://twitter.com/jennygadget/status/1060901628520198144 …

Put another way: it's normal for a few races to be outstanding, but this much uncertainty days into post-election is outside global norms. We've let our electoral infrastructure to crumble and/or be politicized and weaponized. Fixing this should be the highest political priority.

Is it true that everyone else can? I feel like, when I've paid attention to foreign elections, there have often been several day lags. What countries do this well?
-
Most EU Countries don't really have issues calling elections on election night as far as I'm aware.

I think the US being as rich as it is, ultimately, is part of the problem, as it is in healthcare as well. The "eh, it's limping along fine" mentality keeps the rot around.

Equally or more important is allowing people to vote properly. I volunteered to help get out the vote and what I saw was insane: absentee ballots not sent out, polls running out of ballots, polls not opening on time, early voting hours and days changing and unpublicized, etc.

If they fixed every other reason not to call on election night EXCEPT this one I would be satisfied

Can fix, but don’t want to let the people who can do it though. There’s also a .. let’s say .. huge trust problem since some in technology have been keen to selfishly exploit every opening.
