Apathy generation is a facilitator of authoritarianism. My new NYT oped on our vicious cycle of losing trust in democratic institutions including voting, which lowers participation so they fail even more. Remedy is to embrace and fix—yes, even the failing. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/03/opinion/midterm-election-hacked.html …pic.twitter.com/tpYlLysKI7

USA is far from there but it's on that road, familiar to many of us from around the world. Politics is broken in many ways, so it gets abondoned further. Vicious cycle. It's a hard-sell but neither pretendending everything is great nor surrendering to the cynicism is the way out.

If you lived in a country where they really, really didn't work, it may be easier to tell the difference—even for you. Differentiating between *faulty* democracy and *actual* dictatorship/fascism is crucial—esp. if you want to avoid the real thing. 😬 https://twitter.com/FillOaks/status/1059448724420734978 …

I'm well aware of the many failings. May you never live in an actual *failed state* though. Please look around the world and understand what actual, real, full failure looks like—and let's please work to avoid it. No. This would make things worse. There are very good reasons voting technology experts recommend optical scan ballots plus meaningful audits.https://twitter.com/nytopinion/status/1059539854843932674 …

Voter suppression efforts are in full force, and our country needs a better way to make sure that all citizens can vote. @AlexTapscott writes that online voting using blockchain technology can help us solve these problems. https://nyti.ms/2QssnFW

Can you imagine how this would work? First, let have the government build a biometric database of every citizen and then watch as that database is breached and thumbprints spoofed with inkjet printers (yes yes..😬) 😱😱😱😱 Anyway, optical scan ballot plus meaningful audits. 🤷‍♀️pic.twitter.com/vUf9nk07sO

*let's.. correct our typos. Also, besides the insecurity, the point of my op-ed is that electoral trust is a political process. What matters *MOST* is that people have trust and that is best achieved if people can participate in audits if necessary—less "trust us" the better.

Also let's hand-wave and assume we have the perfect digital/computational set-up for electronic voting (no we don't and we won't at any near enough future I can imagine but for the sake of the argument, let's assume that spherical cow). It would still be a bad idea. Too opaque.

What advantage do optical ballots have over paper ballots, counted by humans (which many European countries practice)? Yes, it would make results slightly slower, but is simple, safe, nothing can break down - other than physical assault against ballot boxes it should be reliable
