This is myopic. Many are just starting to learn how to take action and I'm sure that statement is either fear of repercussions or wanting to focus the issue. This year alone has proved that we have no problem challenging the company on broader social impacts of our products.

I'm a Googler who attended the Cambridge rally & I'm pretty sure the intent was to reinforce that US labor law protects discussing workplace issues but not confidential product information. The speaker's an engineer, not a labor lawyer, so it might not have come across perfectly.
