I don't think @twitter really understands deeply how its own product is used.

That's fine. Screenshots are different from quotes in some pretty significant (better) ways.

Zeynep - has anyone done work on effects of slowing the time factor? Mimic analog time aperture and you should get analog volatility...could mitigate problems without having to deal with qualitative content adjudication?

Could not disagree more. Mastodon doesn't have quote tweets, but on twitter they enable all sorts of advanced functionality. Twitter is & always was a mass conversation; if people can't adjust to that, why blame the platform? Tweet DRM won't prevent screenshots, which can then be posted.

Screenshots add friction. The point isn’t that anyone is hiding. It’s Twitter! Friction is a beautiful and natural thing. A chunk of online problems are due to virality/less friction oriented design.

How exactly would you be able to make a tweet non-embeddale as long as links exist on Twitter?

What if Twitter restricted not just quote tweets but also *replies* to people you follow? (Or maybe second-degree people you follow?) That could make the product safer—and maybe better! But it’s also easier to see how the product could suffer for lack of engagement and virality.
