Hopefully we will arrive at a point where social media data is end to end encrypted sooner than later. For the average person (non journalists etc) who don’t need to use social media, they will hopefully consider not using it at all.

Unless we (the people and government) make them, it won't happen. They make a lot of money with this data.

It really comes down to the business model. In advertising-driven social media, the incentives are to gather an infinite amount of data per customer, so the company can charge a premium to microtarget ads. If they money comes directly from consumers, that incentive goes away.
