misuse by politicians (globally) exploited poor & ambiguous understanding of what term 'fake news' meant, depriving it of specific meaning... it started off meaning one thing, turned into another. and names DO matter. a lot. 'fake news' connotes very differently to disinformation

I would suggest a possible cause for the abandonment is the fear of being seen to lose, especially when the coin of the realm is "winning," and that one remedy for this is confidence. Which an effective strategy can support.
