If people can’t keep terms from being misused, that’s a function of power and effective opposition. Abandoning terms and concepts is just a sign of weakness. On what planet do people think if we stop using the term, somehow, it ends up with less censorship by authoritarians?

Politics isn’t an essay contest graded by some external teacher. It’s about power and legitimacy, and fighting for those. Do people think there’s a concept that will magically be immune to misuse by authoritarians? Why bother, let’s all go home, preemptively cede all ground.

There is no clear line and no authority to legiferate on this apart from the government. Except the government itself (and political forces as well) are the very subjects of this meta-paradox. We need an authority above questioning to solve this. But there isn't any.

If they accuse dissidents of “lies”, we should stop talking about their lies. This strategy of constant retreat will just end up with self-censorship, and no gain.
