“These midnight voyages are playing out across the country, as the federal government struggles to find room for more than 13,000 detained migrant children — the largest population ever — whose numbers have increased more than fivefold since last year.”

“Some staff members cried when they learned of the move, the shelter worker said, fearing what was in store for the children who had been in their care. Others tried to protest. But managers explained that tough choices had to be made to deal with the overflowing population.”

Not all the children were separated from parents. Some arrived alone, victims of the humanitarian crisis in Central America—which has much to do with us, too. But all that aside, DO WE HAVE NO MEANS TO KEEP 13,000 children except 20 to a room in bunk beds in a patch desert?!?!?!

Note that there's no new influx of children—alone or with parents—that's causing this. This five-fold increase in one year from 2,400 to 12,800 detained children is due to "a reduction in the number being released to live with families and other sponsors." https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/12/us/migrant-children-detention.html …pic.twitter.com/hA9uvBucGw

The problem isn't lack of sufficient homes willing to step up. Open up the channels, and I and many others will take these children, or support families who have language skills or are their relatives. This country isn't lacking in compassion or resources.https://twitter.com/bettybaze/status/1046425441173671936 …

I've worked with refugee children for years. No shortage of people who will step up for kids. *Of course* it's a thorny problem. Traumatized kids who don't yet speak English, underfunded services... But this country does not *have to* put children into camps in the desert. NOPE.

I have been trying to figure out how I can offer my home to one or more of these children. I live in NY. I’m a teacher and have raised two very successful daughters. I’m bilingual and a naturalized citizen. Can we demand a process to get these children out of immigration jail?

it is a money maker, a growth industry. For-profit corporations make money by putting these kids in tents in the desert. The these profiteers have lobbyists who bribe our elected people. Traumatized kids have no lobbyists.

The single and stated goal of the program is to terrorize people already fleeing horrible circumstances (and energize the base that craves vindictiveness, showy cruelty).

It’s not even *right* problem. For funds spent on this, they could have gotten enough lawyers and judges to clear backlog and do what amounts to instant review - no holding areas required. That would have overwhelming support - they don’t want real solutions, they want discord.
