"We want to reach as many customers as we can with this incredible technology," Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller said, without irony, while Apple phased out the *only* phone I can hold without risking dropping. Stuck with Apple for security reasons. 🤬http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-apple-iphone-ipad-20180912-story.html …

"Welcome to the big screens" says Apple and women like me with small hands who need the most secure phone for safety reasons are stuck with something they can't hold and constantly risk dropping. Especially noteworthy that they now have these screens without edges. They could even —gasp— introduce a newer small phone. Take away whatever bells and whistles you want. Androids aren't safe or secure, and the only maybe feasible alternative, Google Pixel, is also too big.🤬

Yep. Tech tech market is many companies holding us hostage because there aren't feasible alternatives. Given my line of work, I simply cannot use Android phones. They aren't safe or secure. I'm stuck with discomfort, inconvenience and replacing screens. https://twitter.com/peteyreplies/status/1040214219701080066 …

Androids don't get timely updates and don't have Apple's security hardware and design. If you must use an Android, I'd say only Google Pixel (also too big!). But good luck stopping Google surveillance. I had one for many years—terrible privacy practices.https://twitter.com/stuartleech/status/1040216320577556480 …

I've lost count of the encounters I've had with dissidents, investigative journalists and others around the world at great risk of being hacked and subjected to terrible consequences who *know* they should get an iPhone for security but cannot afford it.https://twitter.com/fbajak/status/1040218235554148352 …

The other issue is cost. Apple is making secure comms a commodity most people can’t afford. https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1040211744487075842 …

You could always try to actually read and understand the full argument. I always get this lecture: "buy another phone!" The market isn't working. There is only one secure phone ecology and one phone company with acceptable privacy/security practices. One. https://twitter.com/k1ug3/status/1040220166116843520 …

Is there anyway to get even used iPhones to these people? With the next wave of upgrades coming I’d be interested

They can buy a previous generation iPhone for a price similar to an Android. The previous generation iPhone is likely to *still* be more secure overall. @megarush1024 @fbajak @ikn_mark

iOS 12 is supported on an iPhone 6, which goes for under $150 (and gives an equivalent experience to a new $200 Android.) It would be better to get a new phone, of course, but there are perfectly reasonable options if cost is a concern

Yeah, we do this a lot. I encourage journalists/dissidents to get used, older iPhones rather than new Android (Pixel would be kinda okay but that's also expensive). A cheaper iPhone with maybe less bells-and-whistles but similar level of security would be a global game-changer.
