"We want to reach as many customers as we can with this incredible technology," Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller said, without irony, while Apple phased out the *only* phone I can hold without risking dropping. "Welcome to the big screens" says Apple and women like me with small hands who need the most secure phone for safety reasons are stuck with something they can't hold and constantly risk dropping. Especially noteworthy that they now have these screens without edges. They could even —gasp— introduce a newer small phone. Take away whatever bells and whistles you want. Androids aren't safe or secure, and the only maybe feasible alternative, Google Pixel, is also too big.🤬

Yep. Tech tech market is many companies holding us hostage because there aren't feasible alternatives. Given my line of work, I simply cannot use Android phones. They aren't safe or secure. I'm stuck with discomfort, inconvenience and replacing screens. https://twitter.com/peteyreplies/status/1040214219701080066 …

Androids don't get timely updates and don't have Apple's security hardware and design. If you must use an Android, I'd say only Google Pixel (also too big!). But good luck stopping Google surveillance. I had one for many years—terrible privacy practices.https://twitter.com/stuartleech/status/1040216320577556480 …

Excuse my ignorance but what about iPhones makes them more secure than android? Genuine question...

I've lost count of the encounters I've had with dissidents, investigative journalists and others around the world at great risk of being hacked and subjected to terrible consequences who *know* they should get an iPhone for security but cannot afford it.https://twitter.com/fbajak/status/1040218235554148352 …

You could always try to actually read and understand the full argument. I always get this lecture: "buy another phone!" The market isn't working. There is only one secure phone ecology and one phone company with acceptable privacy/security practices. One. https://twitter.com/k1ug3/status/1040220166116843520 …

How ironic, I’m setting up a Google Pixel 2 right now for my son, and I just saw the default settings where Google wanted to scan for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi even when those services were turned off. I declined, but we both know many people just skip that without reading it.

and Apple doesn't shut bluetooth and wifi fully off unless you dig in the settings.. "Even when it’s off, the antenna stays on, looking for new devices"

..which isn't always true. Contrary to Apple, Google allows many vendors, resellers and so on, on their platform. There are many, many flavours of "Android". Lots -indeed- don't get proper security updates. But many do, e.g Googles own flagships or 3rd parties like Fairphone.

The lack of timely updates is not the fault of Google or the Android Operating System. Blame the companies who get the updates early enough to send out, but pile all their crap on top. Updates take forever with them. Looking at you @SamsungMobileUS and @LGUSAMobile

Actually only the Google phones have monthly security updates. The reason why other Android brands don't have timely updates has to do with the carrier not the manufacturer.
