Another striking example. It's true that people seeking such content are flocking to YouTube, but YouTube is also *feeding* this to large numbers of people. It's helping normalize these ideologies and expand their base. Culture is formed by exposure, repetition and acceptance. https://twitter.com/Max_Fisher/status/1038096345419182081 …

That’s the problem with these machine learning algorithms. It’s not so straightforward to audit their decisions, although I’m guessing YouTube is probably using some form of collaborative filtering.

this is the fundamental problem with a society sitting on the ideological piers that the best is the most profitable and the most profitable is the best. If you can’t break that association, you can’t even begin to move anything forward.

Another one is just as dangerous: free speech is good, always. Of course it is if it holds power accountable and keeps citizens informed abt the real world. But lies not only don't serve those purposes, they actively damage them by drowning out truth. Lies deserve no protection.

Google has a free speech right to amplify or suppress those videos, but I seriously doubt it's Google's intention to do the former and think you're ignoring how difficult it is to do the latter at scale.

Hate speech is legally protect unless it invites lawless action or is likely to produce violence. I think we’ve seen a lot of that with Trump & his followers. Maybe we should start pushing for it because no one else is holding him accountable.

Serious question: Do Google execs know/understand this is happening and go along with it? I.e., they’re cool with it as it makes good money? Or is this something they have belatedly discovered — ie, it’s not intentional and they’re trying to fix it?
