Another example for the history books. 1-There is no cheap way to do content moderation well at scale; 2-It's not clear how to do it much better at scale with a lot more investment but; 3-It's guaranteed to be done badly at the level of investment—as a cost center—it gets now.https://twitter.com/AnneFrankCenter/status/1034828884490027008 …

Hi @Facebook, you removed our post promoting the need for Holocaust Education for apparently violating community standards. You haven't given us a reason, yet allow Holocaust Denial pages to still exist. Seems a little hypocritical?(the post was the exact same as the tweet below) https://twitter.com/AnneFrankCenter/status/1031934713001385985 …

Companies are, of course, developing ML solutions for content moderation. What could go wrong?

Certainly can’t be done by relying on algorithms. Humans are they key -& expensive - essential

The crux of my argument during the Leslie Jones debacle. Little has changed since then. Well-meaning people demanding something platforms can't really do, not without compromising their very existence. "But do something!" tends to be bad advice. https://medium.com/@JuanIsidro/last-night-female-actor-leslie-jones-signed-off-twitter-due-to-the-overwhelming-amount-of-racist-47e3a95ec1d7 …

How are we deciding if moderation is done well or poorly? There are lots of examples of poor moderation, but do we know how strong a trend they represent? For every moderation mistake fb makes, how many does it get right?

The only way to do anything "cheap" well at scale is decentralizing.

And all too often, "moderation" simply means removing posts that have attracted a small number of flags. That makes it easy for opponents to game the moderation system, as is the case here.

Has anyone talked seriously about investing in moderation as a competitive advantage? Actually being able to market the fact you can trust what you see? I realize FB is a monopoly but it also has an NPS of -27 which suggests vulnerability.

I get why (1) is true for social networks that exist today. But I don't get why it's necessarily true. Why couldn't some other network come along and employ a design that makes content moderation sustainable if not cheap? Network effects make it hard, but obvs not impossible.

I think this statement is also wrong. Moderation technically doesn’t work at any scale. It is just well-tolerated by smaller groups who develop tribal feelings. Their group vs others. That doesn’t mean “moderation worked” to me.

Any online community that cares more about community than eyeballs should put forth the human effort that this requires.
