This article seems well meaning. But to say that engineers were the first to spot the flaws of the gig economy (in February 2017!) is, at best, ignorant, and at worst arrogant. This piece repeats the erasure of working class people it purports to redress. https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/08/silicon-valley-engineers-fear-they-created-a-monster …pic.twitter.com/pmbl8f9rgm

what was going on, actual 1099 workers have been providing first hand accounts of their working conditions to labor reporters for years. It might be worth your time to read some of that reporting.

This is confusing because the article says "And the only people who understand the threat are the ones enabling it.” But clearly, the engineers aren’t the only people who understand the threat.

There are decades of scholarship on this very topic. I made the same argument in my masters thesis in the early aughts and there was already decades of work exactly on that—on tech, software & economic forces as well. I really like the argument but engineers are last to the game.

I think this will be much better if framed as, finally, some engineers are also realizing something that’s been analyzed & written about for a long time. It’s great that more engineers are there! But really shouldn’t claim they’re first, or only, when they’re super late. 🤷‍♀️

I mean all this honestly in a positive manner. I totally agree with the sentiment. Work on this goes back to 60s, 70s...
