Yes, people's old tweets can be revealing and worth probing. Yes, they can also easily be misinterpreted and taken out-of-context—and weaponized by bad-faith actors. Also, yes people grow and change and we should welcome this. No, you cannot avoid judgment in all this. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My 2¢ to emerging writers: don't write that confessional first-person or controversial piece for that edgy site for peanuts! They'll take the hate/outrage clicks & leave you high and dry. If you've something that'll expose you to the storm, wait and write it when you are strong.

I really don't like this take. It seems to let alt-reich stars rising via outrage-generating hate off the hook, and doesn't address that the "outrageous" tweets by Jeong, etc. are not at all the same, and said outrage is fake/disingenuous.

Maybe I've just seen too much "he's not actually a nazi, that's just how you establish a brand for yourself"...

Isn't it better to build up expertise and become a respected writer? It's easy to get caught up in flame wars, but if you grow your career through attacks, it can easily be destroyed by attacks. Focus on building respect in a niche rather than huge followers.

$150 an article? That's a lot of scratch for words. It's embarrassing how little I got paid when I started in journalism.

You’re defending this person’s clearly expressed beliefs? Why. She’s certainly not a 10th grader.
