At this point, any other suggestion besides some form of verifiable paper trail plus meaningful audit means that the person either doesn’t understand voting, computers, people, their intersection—or likely doesn’t understand any of it.

Note carefully
@zeynep ‘s wording: *with meaningful audit processes*. Seatbelts don’t protect you if you don’t wear them; paper ballots don’t protect elections if they never properly examined.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1023926111519100929 … -
Also, the recount process itself needs to be depoliticized, so that if mismatches occur they are automatically handled. It doesn't do any good to have paper backups if no one ever checks them, or the winning party pushes the system to block validation.

For blind voters, I would still like there to be voice controlled terminals. But ALL that they do is print on the blind voter's ballot.

Randomly choose (*AFTER* the voting ends) about 10% of polling places to be recounted manually. If you get a different result in any randomly selected place, recount everything by hand. One compromised polling place isn't enough to change the result of the whole election.

Yes. And if voters cast their ballots into a ballot box where they'll wait until the end of voting before they get fed into scanners, it'll also ensure anonymity of votes.
-
Disagree on this - in NYC, it gets fed into the scanner immediately, and if there's an error (double-voting, unreadable, etc.), it's immediately spat back, so the voter can correct or (if they want), just go ahead.

Santa Clara County (Silicon Valley) now uses scannable paper ballots. Very large stiff paper. Of course paper has its own vulnerabilities but they can't be altered over the Internet.
