Information security professionals tend to be independent-minded—often with a contrarian streak. It fits the profession. “What if I follow this seemingly hopeless trail fifty-different ways?” If consensus emerges, it’s a pretty strong signal.

I agree, though it is important to distinguish "paper trail" from "paper ballots," as American voting history gives us some idea of the problem with certain iterations of paper ballots.

All electronic voting machines need not be connected to the Internet nor be full fledged PCs running some version of Windows. Check out the machines in India that now have VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail).

Votes signed with a public key system are verifiable and non-tamperable. These current issues are to do with bad implementation not the whole concept. If you think paper voting is safer then you probably don't understand how vulnerable that is too.
