New address and the few internet options are all highway robbery.😱 @GetSpectrum wants to charge an extra $15 if you want wifi. Whut? @ATT marketing a slug-slow $50-a-month copper line. "For elderly people on email, maybe?" technician said sheepishly. Tell me your horror stories!

Ah, even worse. They want to charge $5 a month forever if you use their equipment for wifi. It's 2018. WIFI IS HOW MOST EVERYONE USES INTERNET. Just price-gouging. I did contact a rep who had nothing else to say because she realized I understood the game.https://twitter.com/Ask_Spectrum/status/1022849197773545472 …

My apologies, there is a $10 activation fee for wireless as well as a monthly cost of $5. You can avoid those costs by using your own equipment and setting up the wireless network yourself. I would also recommend contacting a representative at 855-707-... http://bit.ly/2Agnk83

If you know to ask, they immediately say, ah, okay, use your own router. (which makes more sense). But if you are a non-technical, ordinary person, it just says "Do you want Wi-fi" and you are stuck.https://twitter.com/richardherlihy/status/1022852832310046720 …

How would they enforce this? Do they not let you use your own router / configure it?

Yes it is if you are not a technical person and do not understand what these are. I have my own router and this is not a problem for me. They are charging who-knows-how-many people monthly fees for something that should be standard.https://twitter.com/kchoudhu/status/1022852797627330562 …

      1. Buy your own modem 2. Buy your own router. There, that wasn't so hard was it? https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1022852170926964736 …

Yep, there was a whole set of other hidden charges, weird language there. Also, still can't get over @ATT charging an enormous fee for very slow internet, basically for "elderly people on email". US is so behind and predatory on broadband it's nuts. https://twitter.com/TonySoaprhino/status/1022853347576111106 …

My next door neighbor and I were just talking about this. He calculated he’s spent *over $1k* to rent a modem from Comcast. Meanwhile, being technical, I’ve spent ~$100 to own my 2 cable modems. The first lasted me over 10 years until Comcast stopped supporting its protocol.

Even if you have your own router, if you have a family full of people who can't/won't tolerate a little disruption, it can be a pain to keep it up to date, it's not something I do every day so I have to assume I'll make a mistake.

My great-grandmother paid a monthly fee to rent her rotary phone from Pacific Bell for *50* years. When we told PacBell to come get their phone, they told us we could keep it.

It's worse than that. At least for the router functionality (not sure about the WiFi), it isn't even any extra hardware—their standard cable modem has the functionality built in. They just configure it differently.
