New address and the few internet options are all highway robbery.
@GetSpectrum wants to charge an extra $15 if you want wifi. Whut? @ATT marketing a slug-slow $50-a-month copper line. "For elderly people on email, maybe?" technician said sheepishly. Tell me your horror stories!

Yes it is if you are not a technical person and do not understand what these are. I have my own router and this is not a problem for me. They are charging who-knows-how-many people monthly fees for something that should be standard.https://twitter.com/kchoudhu/status/1022852797627330562 …

Yep, there was a whole set of other hidden charges, weird language there. Also, still can't get over
@ATT charging an enormous fee for very slow internet, basically for "elderly people on email". US is so behind and predatory on broadband it's nuts. https://twitter.com/TonySoaprhino/status/1022853347576111106 …This Tweet is unavailable.Show this thread

i love the idea of the person on the other end of the line shuffling their papers frantically when they realize you know what a router is

All the employees I encounter are sheepish and apologetic. They understand. Can't blame them, really.

While I generally love
@verizonfios, they get you via their router being *required* if you want to use FIOS TV (the guide and on-demand come via the net and won’t work reliably if you use your own equipment). Same for watching video on mobile — can only do with their router.

I think framing it as the maintenance/service contract rather than the hardware makes it (somewhat) acceptable. i.e. how much debugging becomes their responsibility, probability of having to send a tech out to fix things, etc.
-
If a user provides their own wi-fi, anything from that point on is their responsibility to maintain. If the ISP provides it, a service call with "the internet doesn't work" is a bigger job.

Gotcha, I was imagining a nefarious* scenario where they refused to give you the setup details for connecting the router and/or pre-configured it somehow. (*Though obviously it's shameless either way)
