I can see it all - first I'd think it's sweet to be able to go out on the water for the afternoon, then i'd want to be able to host people on it for the day, then I'd want to spend the night, then i'd want to host people for the night, then I'd want to be able to travel

Best use of a boat I've seen is to keep it docked at the marina, pretty much full time, at an expensive city *cough SF* and use it as a pied-à-terre. Sleep with the waves, wake up to seagulls, don't lug your stuff. TRICK: NEVER LOOK AT NEARBY BOATS. That avoids the upgrade trap.
