If they were so good at it, they wouldn't have lost their own empire.🤔 Russian meddling is real, but Russia didn't force US into the Iraq war, 2008 crisis, inequality, the rich fleeing taxes, monopolies, no accountability for the powerful.. Address those, and rest is a footnote.pic.twitter.com/WCDYt8Bbo3

This narrative of an omnipotent, omniscient mastermind engineering things for decades is just wrong and harmful. It creates unnecessary defeatism, and it's not what happened. The problems are homegrown. The reach of the meddling is a symptom of how real the homegrown issues are.

Ok but so what? One twenty-something so blazingly obvious—shirtless Putin phone case!!!—with a predilection for vodka shots (student in new country!) playing spy is... irrelevant. Need to uncover meddling and corruption without losing sense of proportion.https://twitter.com/postroz/status/1022084142526291968 …

Long before the indictment, I joined the info-security community in pointing out how obvious the RU meddling was. The evidence is, and has been, in plain sight. The reason the evidence isn’t enough is that the politics is broken. That the politics is broken is the key issue.

I think the problem here is that the Left wants to create a simple narrative to explain their defeat by such an obviously obtuse president, instead of taking a good look at themselves.

They merely weaponized our worst selves. We had them to begin with.

I'm still waiting for evidence that you could use a word as strong as "weaponized". I agree there was meddling but how effective it was is still up in the air no?

Yep. I think it was @Aelkus who once had a thread about how America is like a normally-fearless animal that is injured and now others are looking to take advantage -- heal the underlying problems we have and our vulnerability to Russian meddling decreases quite a bit.

Yeah but a candidate who was addressing those issues--and Clinton proposed sharply progressive taxes, a public option, extension of Dodd Frank to shadow banking-- would have to face Russian interference if she also intended to enforce the Magnitsky Act

Nixon et al made friends with fascism to combat Communism. Communism collapsed under its own weight. Fascism is worst human impulses formalized. Let's root it out and squash it.
