Harder to find a group of people more *intentional* about "denying" an atrocity in order to pave the way for more violence than holocaust-deniers. I mean happened in Europe, within living memory, with more documentation than almost any other mass killing.https://www.recode.net/2018/7/18/17575156/mark-zuckerberg-interview-facebook-recode-kara-swisher …

Later he tries to clarify. But "fight bad speech with good speech" doesn't really work in a FB world, if it ever did. Still the issues really *are* challenging. Facebook is in over its head but nobody has a full answer—but much to do without full answer. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/18/technology/mark-zuckerberg-facebook-holocaust-denial.html …pic.twitter.com/cs8T0H9SCT

I should add that what should be banned and what should not be rewarded with attention is tricky... Every solution has downsides; that's the political discussion we must have. But "intent" isn't a good yardstick mostly because the most horrific actors can easily play ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Also, it' 2018. If the CEO of Facebook thinks Holocaust-deniers are just a bunch of distateful people having an honest disagreement with other people, and then has to clarify 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 That's besides the what to do question.

I wrote a whole article about "marketplace of ideas" for @WIRED where I explain why "let good speech counter bad speech" doesn't work (if it ever really did) in the digital age. This isn't an endorsement for banning it all though. https://www.wired.com/story/free-speech-issue-tech-turmoil-new-censorship/ … https://twitter.com/gidimeister/status/1020295306028683264 …

You can't simply counter lies with truth. We know that lies have lasting harmful effects and that belief in lies persist and even withstand attempts at correction.

I'm reminded of that saying about expecting someone to understand something when their livelihood depends on not understanding it.

The problem with the Popper Paradox is that there's no clear line beyond what, Nazism? Sure, Hitler was objectively bad, but that doesn't help much.

The solution to somebody shouting bad things is not to shout good things louder. The only real solution IMO is to educate people so that they recognize a bad thing (fallacious reasoning) when they hear it.
