Harder to find a group of people more *intentional* about "denying" an atrocity in order to pave the way for more violence than holocaust-deniers. I mean happened in Europe, within living memory, with more documentation than almost any other mass killing.https://www.recode.net/2018/7/18/17575156/mark-zuckerberg-interview-facebook-recode-kara-swisher …

I should add that what should be banned and what should not be rewarded with attention is tricky... Every solution has downsides; that's the political discussion we must have. But "intent" isn't a good yardstick mostly because the most horrific actors can easily play ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Also, it' 2018. If the CEO of Facebook thinks Holocaust-deniers are just a bunch of distateful people having an honest disagreement with other people, and then has to clarify

That's besides the what to do question.Show this thread -
I wrote a whole article about "marketplace of ideas" for
@WIRED where I explain why "let good speech counter bad speech" doesn't work (if it ever really did) in the digital age. This isn't an endorsement for banning it all though. https://www.wired.com/story/free-speech-issue-tech-turmoil-new-censorship/ … https://twitter.com/gidimeister/status/1020295306028683264 …This Tweet is unavailable.Show this thread

"Facebook is over its head." What I find so worrying is that it's taken this long for that to be generally understood. The problem is technology businesses eschew all ethical discussion in their pursuit of success and they are inherently fast moving - a toxic combination.

It worked in a human scale world devoid of mediums. But we are 5000 years past that time. What it shows is that although they are our cultures thought leaders on digital networks, they have no idea how they actual work. Or they do. And in the words of Google they do evil.

"Only thing that fights bad speech is more speech" is a libertarian trope that ignores the medium in such a way I've always assumed whoever came up with it didn't intend it to be used outside face-to-face arguments.

care to name a better way to combat bad ideas? enforced silence or compelled speech does nothing to actually combat bad ideas held by people in their heads.
