Heard about @Elonmusk's rescue "submarine"? The cave-diver who masterminded the Thai cave rescue called it a "PR stunt"—that was the politest thing he said. You might be wondering: well, he tried to help. Let me explain with this thread and this NYT piece. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/14/opinion/sunday/elon-musk-thailand-hubris.html …pic.twitter.com/MWicaJKaA6

But my point isn't to criticize you for exploring a back-up option (is it still in development with domain experts?) but that the kind of publicity you seek/bring has downsides whatever your intentions may be, and that, broadly, the incredible rescue has broader lessons for tech.

Your sub may be an option for other incidents. It takes a lot of effort to find the right config, a lot of slow iterative work (expert cave-divers do something terribly dangerous with so little loss of life because of that) and that's worth thinking about rather than get mad.

There’s a Heinlein quote about teaching to sing that I think applies here. I don’t see any scenario where @elonmusk has an epiphany no matter how clearly, calmly and impressively patiently you explain it.

This is hilarious. He isn’t seeking publicity. Launching rockets does that. Saving kids, offering help, looks good for the Red Cross. For Elon, it is him being an altruistic person, not an innovative CEO seeking profit. Improving the world comes before profit for Elon.

Elon has 22.3 million followers yet only follows 60 people himself. Doesn't exactly indicate the kind of guy who would take things slowly and seek out others' opinions.

Can you just recognize the fact that regardless of if Elon helped or not, the kids are safe and that's what should be taken away from the situation? If you're looking for a story to cover, try something positive. Helps with morale

There's been plenty of positive coverage of the rescue & zeynep has been very warm in her responses to elon. She is a professor of how tech and policy interact, AND has experience with crisis rescue, so her perspective is particularly worth hearing. +

Who cares if this was public and he was "seeking attention" (I'm sure he had enough attention before already so he doesnt need to seek attention) he was willing and made himself available to help if needed and developed a PlanB in case PlanA didn't work. Journalist's should Stop-

--looking at what Musk did as bad and stop giving him all this negative publicity. That's how y'all brainwash the public opinion. Journalists should instead be more positive and write inspiring articles -to give attention to- the boys & the divers that rescued them.
