Heard about @Elonmusk's rescue "submarine"? The cave-diver who masterminded the Thai cave rescue called it a "PR stunt"—that was the politest thing he said. You might be wondering: well, he tried to help. Let me explain with this thread and this NYT piece. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/14/opinion/sunday/elon-musk-thailand-hubris.html …pic.twitter.com/MWicaJKaA6

Software development has similar processes, covered under testing and release culture. I have heard several technical leaders who are also divers comparevthe two during stand-ups. Not sure why you would assume that culture doesn’t exist.

"move fast and break things" I wonder why I think that. (I'm a programmer by the way, just gave it up to move to academia).

I don’t think that you understand what that value statement meant. It was never against testing or proper release monitoring, to the contrary. I wouldn’t conflate writing code and releasing code at scale.

In my experience as an end user of software, I can say with certainty that the 'safety culture' of software production is not nearly as intense and effective as these more mature, life-threatening industries. How many pieces of software have holes discovered 10yrs later?

Diego, when people talk about how Twitter is a hateful, prejudiced and horrible place, they think about response like yours. When people talk about hatred on-line, the degradation of discussion and violent discrimination, they talk about this.

Zeynep, if you want to know why no one at Facebook or other companies dare respond to you, and you feel like your attempt at advocacy lead to no changes, here’s why.

Well, I lost count of the things that I've advocated for that have been adopted by those companies. I'm not saying it was due to me (who knows and I don't care how it happens) but I advocated for them publicly and non-publicly and some non-significant number are now in products.

Bertil, as you probably know Zeynep is one of the most respected authors in the field. She's published a book and many essays on the different challenges tech industry poses to democracy and public discourse.
