Don't DM for Signal number. Leaves easy-to-recover open trace. Reporters inviting whistleblowing should put their Signal number on their bio. (Don't say "but it's my phone number." Get a separate phone/number for Signal. That's part of the job description of soliciting sources). https://twitter.com/JoePerticone/status/1017836803724922885 …

@wire does not require a phone number to register, and you can even share a short-lived link to a "guest room": a group chat which people can join from browsers even if they don't have Wire accounts. So in fact you don't even have to share your id publicly at all.

I’m puzzled. Wouldn’t any preliminary contact to a known journalist face the same problems? If you can’t publicise your number, then how can someone initiate contact without disclosing the content of their message? Far better to advise people to use burner Signal accounts, no?

Serious question, by the way. I’m not trying to be clever. As a journo who published my Signal number, I really need to learn best practice here….

Protonmail to protonmail is better than signal. IMO.

This I think does not preserve anonymity. Where one party is already self identified by a {username}, does not that leave open the opportunity for LEO et-al to identify the other party via metadata? Better to illicit an anonymous dead-drop using SecureDrop I would think.
