"Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax to take away your guns" not just something "debunked by fact-checkers." It's high-profile incitement to violence and harrasment against bereaved parents who just lost their little children to murder. As is "this pizza shop is a pedophile ring."https://twitter.com/facebook/status/1017529138423328768 …

I'm wary of banning pages. Facebook cannot cure all societal ills. It's good if they finally stop amplifying the worst via algorithms/business model. But there's a line. Inciting violence/harrasment against people, let alone recently bereaved parents is on far side of that line.

I mean... The high-profile claim being pumped to gun-enthusiasts already prone to conspiracy theories is that these parents fake, and are active, multi-year collaborators in a secret, illegal scheme to take away guns. This is incitement to harrasment, at a minimum, and violence.

Plus, there is tons of much more mild content Facebook does ban. This is obviously more bowing to a very-well orchestrated pressure campaign than a difficult decision about a murky case. (This is how a lot of alleged liberal papers publish crappy stuff just to appear balanced).

Being wary of banning is good—free speech as a principle is a valuable starting point with the recognition that every society balances that—somehow—with safety and well-being. The question is how to do update that "somehow" to a digital age where almost anyone can reach billions.

I think they'd give up the money easily if it were just a money issue. This is more fear of pressure/appearances imho. Misguided, though. There pressure will never stop; still have to act.
