Pretty much every elite school I encounter is low-tech or no-tech (especially no edutainment) except limited, very high-end stuff. Instead they’re low staff-pupil ratio and pay teachers well, which public schools don’t—especially with such low rates of taxes paid by corporations.https://twitter.com/odavis_/status/1010139292478459904 …

Also, I am not fond of addiction as the conceptual framing of the problem, but having recently witnessed pretty compulsive behaviors from children with regard to current screens, I’m not even that sure of that anymore.

Addition: I’m hearing that public school pay isn’t lower than some/many elite private schools especially in unionized states. One rarely hears of things where intrinsic rewards are expected to be sufficient in things that affect reproduction of class status. Interesting.

Elite priv sch deeply abt reprod of class, & who teaches part of that. Many subcategories of upper middle class willing to take less to teach in elite private schools - upper middle class moms w/ kids; alumni some w/ trust funds some not; unhappy lawyers; PhD w/out uni job, etc.

Moms of children attending that school, teacher who are utterly burned out on bureaucracy. In the NC public school my daughter attended support staff have been cut to the point that there was one cafeteria worker and one teachers aide

Teaching is highly gendered, and an appropriate occupation for e.g. wife of fund manager.

Possible slight diversion, but here in Australia, once you control for socio-economic background, private/elite schools don't really deliver better student outcomes than the public system. But the notion that gadgets etc are not required for good outcomes /1

Private schools generally pay worse, but the really dedicated teachers still go there because they have more freedom, and fewer bs certification requirements. Based on my wife's Montessori teaching plus my kids mixed schooling.

It depends, @ChiPubSchools are churn & burn shops where good teachers have to supplement classrooms & good schools raise support from parents/community to pay for student-teachers ratios & more. Also CPS employees are generally required to live in Chicago & that can be expensive.

Largest factor that most of my friends & family that are teachers complain about is lack of good administrators w/ resources, they are rare & getting scarcer as politicians insist on loyalty then results w/ budget cuts (recent scandals serve to highlight oversight matters)

pay can be much higher in the "worst" districts, but my understanding is you do less of what people think of as teaching, much more discipline and motivation and other difficult stuff, with fewer clear wins, much more stress
