Pretty much every elite school I encounter is low-tech or no-tech (especially no edutainment) except limited, very high-end stuff. Instead they’re low staff-pupil ratio and pay teachers well, which public schools don’t—especially with such low rates of taxes paid by corporations.https://twitter.com/odavis_/status/1010139292478459904 …

Also, I am not fond of addiction as the conceptual framing of the problem, but having recently witnessed pretty compulsive behaviors from children with regard to current screens, I’m not even that sure of that anymore.

My wife teaches in elite boys school; makes them put phones in hanging clear plastic shoe holder they can see; watches how frequently eyes flit to their phones. Agree "addiction" not good description. Agree also #SV elites parents understand screens = mostly entertainment

I'm also anecdotally pretty convinced my law students who use online law textbooks (much cheaper) retain less from their reading from students using physical books. Certainly true of me.

And studies show that handwritten notes lead to better retention of information, too.

Yes, except for mine, which are unreadable 5 min after writing. My neuropsychiatrist brother says there's some intriguing not-really-quite-"evidence"-but-intriguing: handwriting processes differently neurologically than fast fluent typing which might be a lot more like talking.

I'm much much better with typing. I think handwritting might work better for people currently tested because they grew up with handwriting. It's how we learned but I started typing as soon as I could.

Dr. Bro says maybe-effect applies to those able to text/type faster than it's possible to write, whether as consolidated notes or even verbatim - at some speed, texting (maybe) processes in ways closer to talking. But written v oral so different - see any transcript of oral convo

It's not really about fluency or comfort level, though--it seems to be about verbatim v. processed notes: https://www.npr.org/2016/04/17/474525392/attention-students-put-your-laptops-away … (the article is from 2016; not sure about more recent research)

From the article: even when all students were allowed to review their notes before the test, "the students taking notes by hand still performed better. 'This is suggestive evidence that longhand notes may have superior external storage as well as superior encoding functions...'"
