Pretty much every elite school I encounter is low-tech or no-tech (especially no edutainment) except limited, very high-end stuff. Instead they’re low staff-pupil ratio and pay teachers well, which public schools don’t—especially with such low rates of taxes paid by corporations.https://twitter.com/odavis_/status/1010139292478459904 …

I’m far from an expert on this, but I don’t think it’s true that private schools in NYC pay better than public schools

My kids go to one of those elite schools in NYC. No, the salaries are low—I’m friends with several teachers—but the work environment is fantastic and the students are terrific. Plus they aren’t locked into the common core testing, so it’s great from a teaching perspective.

Interesting. Higher pay for sure in NC. Do they retain the teachers because the work is rewarding—especially without testing?

I don’t know. If you’d like, I could put you in touch with private school teachers who could better answer your questions. Just Dm me with your email.

A genuinely elite private school is like working at a small college. The classes are smaller, you spend less time policing students. Unmotivated and/or disruptive kids are asked to leave. Boarding school teachers probably don't get paid much, but they often get pleasant housing.

It varies a lot. But most religious private schools in my area do pay less than public schools; they retain talent because of what we economists call compensating differentials. Better work environment, smaller class size, fewer discipline problems, more academic freedom

Sometimes talented teachers aren’t certified so as to be public school employees but can be hired by private schools.
