"Write this many words" or "edit this many pages." Baloney. Depends. Maybe that works for the "coach" (taking your money also works for the "coach."). May not work for you. Depends where you are in your writing anyway. Rigid word counts is like the crash diet industry recipes.

Things that we know works: Do write almost every day, even if a little. Set aside time and stick to it. Have rituals. Team up with friends/other writers. Don't wait for inspiration, magic, instructions from paid coach or deadline. Write, edit, rewrite, edit, rewrite, write.

Writing "secrets": 1-There's no shortcut to edit/rewrite/edit/rewrite. Accept this and do it! 2-Clarity of ideas and something to say is the bedrock of writing and no coach will solve that. If you have money to burn, donate to refugee support? Take that good feeling, and write.

No, no, no. I swear I'm not fishing for compliments but I am NOT a good or natural writer. English is not even my native language! I went through the "what's trick find me a coach" phase. Then I met and learned from real writers. They do what I said above.https://twitter.com/dubiousraves/status/1003984999631196160 …

Rigid writing advice/coaching, crash diet industry, real estate webinars... The only exception I would make is hiring a fitness trainer if you’re starting out—just to show you what good form looks like. But do vigorously ignore all rigid writing advice.

I have always thought a good coach is not who tells you what to do but that one who helps you identify what best suits you, works for you and makes you grow.

You don't need to pay anyone money for that. Think about your habits a bit, talk it over with a friend if you must. The "coach" doesn't know you, you do. Coaching is mostly a way to part you with your money.

Seems to be some projection going on here. You are a good writer, so you think it should be snap for everyone else. Not so. Writing can be tough, and good coaching can help clear hurdles. There are worse things people can spend money on.

Some people need rituals/motivation but if writing produces anxiety, the inability to adhere to formulaic prescriptions can feel like defeat. Sometimes I can write productively every day for weeks, and sometimes I need multiple days off to even think.
