So if a Facebook friend of yours had the Facebook app on *their* phone, Facebook shared *YOUR* private data with device-makers, even if you had somehow managed to turn off third-party sharing. "Sorry, not sorry" apology coming in 3, 2, 1. 💰💰💰 https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/06/03/technology/facebook-device-partners-users-friends-data.html …pic.twitter.com/0tSkfWqY17

There's no effective sanction on these giants and no protection of our private information online. This will keep happening in various forms as long as that's true, and in a few decades, everyone will lament the chance we missed to have a sane basis for our digital world.

There are many civic and personal functions you cannot access without Facebook. School districts put emergency information there! There are congressional campaigns with only Facebook pages. People aren't dumb, they are stuck. https://twitter.com/Real_Johannes_P/status/1003614915347800070 …

Here's Facebook's response: all those companies signed agreements. And there were apparently *60* companies that had access to such information. https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2018/06/why-we-disagree-with-the-nyt/ …pic.twitter.com/FWI5tb7zrn

Then we went a little further. We found out the phone could get the user ids, birthdays and work and education histories of nearly all my friends, even though access to such info was supposed to have been walled off years ago. It could also tell which of my friends was online.

Yep. Google is not exculpatory to Facebook; and email is not the same as Facebook. Different considerations and alignment of interest between user/company—say, unlike YouTube!. (See below, Facebook responded with an "email is integrated into OS" argument). https://twitter.com/ashk4n/status/1003986674660061184 …

Zeynep, how is that different from the number of data protection regulations out there. HIPAA deals with patient data and has similar stipulations regarding when the data can be used even though you have it right there, in bulk, on your computer. PCI does the same w/ creditcards.

May be why facebook tried to get into the medical data business, knowing they, unlike Blue Shield, were not subject to HIPAA laws. Maybe they should be. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/05/facebook-building-8-explored-data-sharing-agreement-with-hospitals.html …

This somewhat undermines certain device makers’ “holier than thou” position, doesn’t it?

It undermines facebook. Of the 50 device makers with access to this data, a few did respond to the reporters' questions. So no, it doesn't undermine their position. Some like Amazon and Samsung did not respond.

is apathy in response to a looming sense of inevitable dystopia a "facebook like experience"?
