At this point, there is little mystery. Many school and other mass shooters are motivated by infamy, have too easy access to guns, and mass media continuies to oblige them. They're obsessed with body count, too, because it makes mass media even more likely to do their bidding.

The ask is not a blackout. Responsible reporting. I don't mind the name being reported, but not on loop. Say it once, move on. Don't post their manifesto as is—that's not news judgement. Don't put their face, snuff film or manifesto on loop, on front page. https://twitter.com/jay_shapiro/status/1002158384811044864 …

Ironically, I've been seeing restraint among many ordinary people. These killers are not after marginal fame, or reddit. They want to be on CNN, Washington Post, NYTimes, Fox, USA Today. And they're getting what they want, on their murderous terms. https://twitter.com/jay_shapiro/status/1002159832114368513 …

Yep it’s not guns, reporting on gun mass murderers is the real issue, it’s the reason they never report on serial killers. BTW is it just school shootings, all mass shootings regardless of place, or mass shootings where the murderer is white that the media should ignore?

None of those are what I’m saying.

Right. If news reports just substituted the words "pathetic loser" for the killer's name, these incidents will decline rapidly.

100% Agree. After the Montreal Massacre in 1989, news outlets refused to publish the killers name. On the anniversary, we remember the victims not him.

John Hinckley shot Ronald Reagan because "he wanted Jodie Foster to notice him" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hinckley_Jr …. (he was stalking her...)

What I don't understand is that while similar practices are not uncommon in media, they are not applied to mass shootings. No one would identify a sexual assault victim without explicit consent regardless of ratings, it's easy to see how this ethos can extend to e.g. Parkland.
