Confused and honestly very angry about this Instagram post from an official Instagram account. When is xenophobia ever a “normal reaction”?

Something we’re often told we’ll NEVER see in North America. San Francisco’s Market Street this morning on the first day going car-free. Congratulations & ALL who championed change. HT for video:

This is so perfect. tweets a quote from their head of dev relations about how developers bring value to Twitter. Says “read more”. But the link to actually read more isn’t visible in third-party clients. Tweetbot vs. :

Next week, San Francisco will celebrate Market Street finally being returned to pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders! After years of discussion, activism, and planning, 2020 is the year we will truly put people first on Market Street.

It was always obvious but the lesson of 14 St is that "we can't ban cars until the transit is better" is exactly backwards. We have to ban the cars first to make the transit better.

US: our roads are all gridlocked with cars, how do we fix this? Japan: trains! Netherlands: bikes! Colombia: buses! US: MORE CARS but they drive themselves!

The idea in the Bloomberg transportation plan that everyone else should steal is the annual $12 billion for transit operations. That's the fastest way to improve service for transit riders and make transit a useful travel option for more Americans.

“A train. You’ve invented a train!” may be a trite reply format, but it’s often apt none the less. With trains you also get to share a single power source, get much greater space efficiency, and much higher speed potential. At the cost of some individual luxury and ownership.

Transit is not trying to be faster than driving. It is trying to be a better use of your time. (And money, and mental energy)

Great thread on Northern California’s lack of a vision for public transportation. We need better regional and mega regional governance to develop an integrated world class network.

Reality check: b/c of embodied carbon + battery production, electric car only starts saving emissions after 40,000 miles. Existing EV fleet stands to reduce global temperatures by just 1/100,000 of a degree Celsius by 2100. Real solution: end car-dependency—and don't buy a Tesla.
