Wax? There's usually no wax in pastels. It's a chalk, maybe a gum arabic, and is more like dust.

yeah a lot of pastels have a waxy quality, not sure what it is really but I've heard artists refer to it as wax

Those are oil pastels and they suck. The kind I use aren't waxy at all.
